Hi there,

I have dual nationality. I came into thailand on my south african passport with a one month visa on arrival. Having a 3 month non-immi visa in my italian passport, i then did a visa run to Cambodia with the idea of returning to Thailand on the Italian passport, getting the non-immi visa stamped.

HOWEVER - The authorities on either side of the border refused to stamp the Italian passport and non-immi visa, saying only the passport with the departure stamp (south african passport) could be stamped.

Now back in Thailand on a 15 day visa, in the south african passport, wondering how I can get the non-immi visa in my Italian passport stamped.

From the above experience, I am concerned about doing an overland visa run, though previously (a year ago) had no issues swapping passports when moving over the Malaysian land-border crossing and it is by far the cheapest option.

Otherwise flying to Penang or KL. I am again concerned that authorities at Penang may give similar issues.

Anyone any ideas / similar experiences?

How long do I have to be out the country before returning?

Is there a limit on the number of months I can spend in Thailand in one year? Had previously understood a max of 3months in 1 year, which is the reason I have been using both passports.

How tight is passport control at Penang International and KL International airports?

Thank-you!

If you want to swap passports you'll need to enter by air, not possible at a land border.

Swap passports whilst in the air, you must enter and leave each country using the passport you entered on.

There is no longer any limit on how long you can stay (and there never was one on anything other than visa exemption entries)

This change only works by air (unless official misses it as seems to have happened last time for you). Depart on SA passport and arrive Malaysia on Italian passport. There should not be any issues at airport - it is border crossings where the stamps are checked.

Excellent, thanks to you all!

I am wondering about flying out of Thailand and returning by train, overland, on the same day. I should literally be able to re-enter thailand on the same day I exited?

Any any ideas about getting the Visa stamped in Bangkok? Possible?

Thanks again!

There will be no indication of your exit. You will enter using the second passport that you entered Malaysia with. Should not be a problem as you will have the Malaysia stamp.
