Suthep believes House will welcome electoral system change

BANGKOK, 6 January 2011 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban is confident that the electoral system change proposed in the constitutional reform will receive approval from the House of Representatives.

According to Mr. Suthep, he is not bothered by the report that the Pheu Thai Party is looking to team up with some government coalition parties to vote against the change, adding that he believes the House will not veto the move. He further stated that once the amendments had been made, there would not be any problem within the coalition.

Under the change, the House of Representatives will consist of 500 MPs with 375 from single constituencies and 125 from party lists.

Bt400-billion budget deficit expected for 2012

By The Nation

The government will run a budget deficit for fiscal year 2012 not more than Bt400 billion, or not exceeding 4 per cent of GDP, Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwankhiri says today.

He added that the revenue projection would be Bt1.9 trillion.

Based on the revenue projection, this can assume that the primary expenditures for 2012 should be Bt2.3 trillion, said a market observer.

Trairong said that the concept of investment would be also changed, leading to a lower-investment spending. In the past, the average reimbursement was 76 per cent of total budgeted investment spending. From now, the investment budget would more reflect the real spending.

A couple has filed a complaint with the commissioner of the Region 7 Police Force against an officer who allegedly framed them by planting drugs and demanding money.

Rungtham claimed a police officer came to his sedan and secretly tucked methamphetamine pills inside the driver's safety belt.

His wife, Dararat Phancharoenlak, stated that she decided to give police 30,000 baht in cash as requested, as her husband was being physically attacked.

Region 7 Police Commander Lieutenant General Phongsan Jiam-on said he has instructed the Phetchaburi Province Police Commander to set up a panel to begin an investigation.

He said the victims have asked to identify the officer out of a lineup of some 50 police officers.
