With the Thai tourist visa being free until 31 Mar 2011, is it ok to ask for multiple entries? Last time, I wish I had asked for 2 entries for convenience. Now, since there is no fee, is it ok to ask for 3 or 4, or would they look down on that? I don't want to jinx my application.

It depends upon where you are applying, but you request 1, 2, or 3 entries. Each entry is for 60 days, and can be extended by 30 days for 1900 Baht.

I guess I'm not understanding what multiple entries means. I thought it meant that during my 60-day stay, I could leave and return to Thailand multiple times without paying another visa fee. I'm a USA citizen and know I can get a visa-upon-arrival, but I want to stay for 60 days without the hassle of extending a 30-day visa that they would give me at the airport.

What you get at the airport is a "Visa Exempt" entry of 30 days, and 15 days at a land crossing, it isn't a visa. A Tourist Visa obtained at a consulate, would allow a single entry of 60 days, and without a re-entry permit, it would lapse upon exiting the country. A Tourist Visa entry can be extended for 30 days, cost 1900 Baht.

A multiple-entry visa is valid for an unlimited number of entries into Thailand during the validity period of the visa. For the tourist visa, no multiple-entry visa is available.

You want to enter Thailand multiple times during a period of 60 days. Depending on the length of each stay in Thailand and your nationality you may not even need a visa of any kind. Go here for the list of countries whose nationals qualify for visa-exempt entry of 30 days' stay on each entry, for nationals of some countries even longer.
