UN chief welcomes end of voting in Southern Sudan

2011-01-16 12:47:19 GMT+7 (ICT)

KHARTOUM (BNO NEWS) - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the end of the polling period for the Southern Sudan referendum, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson.

The Secretary-General commended the work of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission in Khartoum and its Bureau in Juba, and of the two parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

He also extended his gratitude to all donor countries that facilitated the process and the observer groups that assessed the situation.

"The Secretary-General congratulates all the people of Sudan for the display of wisdom, patience, and peaceful determination that has characterized the voting over the last week," said spokesman Martin Nesirky.

The UN chief additionally called on Sudanese people to exercise patience and restraint until the final results are announced. Preliminary results are expected to be announced by February 2 and could be certified days later if no appeals are filed.

The week-long referendum, in which about 3.9 million people registered to vote, will determine whether the south remains part of Sudan or chooses independence after a long civil war. In a survey cited by Euronews, about 97 percent said they would vote in favor for their own state.
