Yemen warns demonstrators to obey law

2011-01-20 06:39:18 GMT+7 (ICT)

SANAA (BNO NEWS) -- Yemen said on Tuesday that freedom of expression and organizing peaceful demonstrations are people’s rights, but warned that practicing rights should never violate the constitution and the law, official Saba news agency reported.

A source at the Interior Ministry said that according to law, organizers of demonstrations need to get a permission three days before they take to the streets. Authorities are required to be present at the rally and can break up any demonstration that turns violent or include speeches urging sedition.

"After making it clear, the Interior Ministry urges all citizens to cooperate with the authorities and avoid walking in unauthorized demonstrations or responding to any misleading calls," the source added.

Yemen has been witnessing protests since Friday, when Tunisian ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali escaped to Saudi Arabia, ending his 23 years in power.
