Philadelphia abortion doctor charged for murdering patient and 7 babies

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA (BNO NEWS) -- A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania doctor in charge of an abortion clinic on Wednesday was arrested and charged for the murder of one patient and 7 babies, who were born alive, local media reported.

Dr. Kermit B. Gosnell, 69, head of the Women's Medical Society clinic, which is located in West Philadelphia and opened in 1979, was arrested and charged of murder after a year-long investigation revealed that a 41-year-old woman had died after overdosing on anesthetics in November 2009 in addition to 7 babies that were born alive in the sixth, seventh, or eighth month of pregnancy, philly.com reported.

A 260-page Grand Jury report released Wednesday with photographs revealed that Gosnell routinely delivered live babies in the third trimester of pregnancy, and murdered them by "sticking scissors into the back of the baby's neck and cutting the spinal cord."

The clinic was shut down during a raid last February, but questions regarding how the clinic was able to operate for over 30 years immediately began arising.

During the raid, drug agents were initially in search of illegally dispensed narcotic painkillers, but they found a clinic covered with blood stains, cat feces, broken equipment, and moaning women in the waiting room that smelled like urine.

Gosnell's wife, Pearl, and eight other employees were also arrested, some of which are expected to face murder charges as well. Furthermore, none of the employees had medical credentials.

Gosnell has been charged with the third degree murder of Karnamaya Mongar, 41, a native of Bhutan, who had traveled from Woodbridge, Virginia, for an abortion. She had arrived in the U.S. only five months earlier, and was 19 weeks of pregnancy.
