U.S. tells Kenya to stop extra-judicial killings

2011-01-23 04:10:41 GMT+7 (ICT)

NAIROBI (BNO NEWS) -- The U.S. government on Saturday called for the prosecution of three police officers who were caught on video as they executed suspects in Nairobi, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) reported.

A statement from the U.S. embassy in Nairobi warned that the ongoing police reforms will lose credibility if the Kenyan government does not act to stop extra-judicial killings.

"It is essential for Kenyan authorities to clearly demonstrate that impunity and extrajudicial killings will not be tolerated," read the statement. "Without effective, expeditious, and transparent action, ongoing efforts to carry out police reform will lose credibility and the support of the international community."

The United States welcomed the suspension of the officers involved and said they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The three suspected carjackers who had surrendered to police were killed in the full view of members of the public.
