Many Fear Anti-Thailand Sign Could Fuel Border Conflicts

Thai-Cambodian border trade has now resumed that five Thai citizens have been released.

However, many fear that the ongoing criticism of the Thai military could fuel a new round of border conflicts.

Cross-border trade at the Thai-Cambodian border in the Phu Sing district, in Sisaket province has resumed after the release of the five Thai citizens who were detained in Cambodia.

Thousands of Cambodian merchants have crossed into Thailand and have resumed business.

However, many Thais and Cambodians are concerned that a large sign put up by the Cambodian authorities in the disputed area could fuel a new round of border conflicts.

The sign has an anti-Thai message and states that the Thai military has encroached onto Cambodian soil.

Many people fear this is a delicate issue that could affect diplomatic relations between the two countries and could lead to a border closure.

Commander of the Region 2 Army Lieutenant General Tawatchai Samutsakorn has issued a request to the Cambodian authorities asking them to remove the sign.

However, the request has so far gone unanswered.

It is believed that the sign was put up some time after December 1, 2010 when the both Thai and Cambodia military agreed to reduce their presence in the disputed area near the Preah Vihear Temple.

The number of Thai and Cambodian forces deployed in the area has been reduced to five unarmed soldiers to ease tensions.

However, ever since the force reduction, the Cambodian media has been claiming that the disputed land is under Cambodian control and that the sign was erected around that time.

Meanwhile, the Cambodian military authority responsible for the area said that he is also concerned, but cannot do anything unless ordered by his superiors or Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Police Arrest Two Drug Dealers Linked to Prisoner Drug Ring

Two people were arrested in a drug bust in Chachoengsao province.

One of them is the son of a subdistrict headman in Prachinburi province.

The two have been linked to a drug ring at the Bangkok Remand Prison.

Chachoengsao Police arrested 23 year old Nakhonchai Maikonglai and 47 year old Amnuay Saojeen in a drug bust in which 2,600 methamphetamine or “Yaba” pills were seized.

Nakhonchai is the son of the Bang Kham subdistrict headman in Prachin Buri province.

After receiving a tip, police set up a sting operation in which they had a decoy offer to buy 200 meth pills from Nakhonchai for 25,000 baht.

The man was caught when he arrived to deliver the stash.

According to the police investigation, Nakhonchai obtained the drugs from Amnuay, who makes a living as a shrimp farm owner in Chachoengsao province.

Officers went to search Amnuay's cottage at his farm and found 2,400 more pills in a snack bag.

Amnuay was previously convicted on drug charges when he served time at the remand prision.

After his release, he ran a shrimp farm, but suffered a financial loss.

In need of cash, Amnuay contacted Pairoj Kitdee a fellow inmate in the Bangkok Remand Prison, asking to buy drugs from Pairoj's people and have Nakhonchai sell them to other dealers in Bangkok.

Army to Sort Out Issue of Controversial Border Sign

The defense minister says the army chief is now seeking a resolution over Cambodia's sign at a temple on disputed territory, labeling Thai troops as invaders of Cambodian territory.

Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan stated Army Commander in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha is proceeding to resolve the problem concerning the stone tablet at a temple on disputed territory, accusing Thai troops of invading Cambodian soil.

Prawit said the matter is being addressed and there is nothing to worry about as it will be sorted out.

The minister also remarked the government is ready to oversee security for the protests by every group, including those by the People's Alliance for Democracy ,or PAD, and its allies.

The PAD is set to stage a mass rally at the Makkawan Bridge tomorrow to press for the nullification of the 2000 memorandum of understanding on the Thai-Cambodian border demarcation and to show its opposition against Cambodia's recent arrest of seven Thais for alleged intrusion of its territory.

Prwait said the government remains undecided on whether to implement the Internal Security Act around the rally site, but suggested the protest not be relocated.

He affirmed the authorities' handling of the PAD's gathering will be in compliance with the law.

He also insisted the campaigns by all protest groups are under watch of intelligence agencies.
