Non-O (Over 50) Visa

Recommended Posts

As far as I know the Non-O (Over 50) "Retirement" visa can be obtained only in the home country.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am asking this because this is in contradictions with the recent posting on this Forum:

A non-O visa based on retirement can be obtained in any country.

You are confused with the O-A (long stay visa), which is specifically for retirement. This one can indeed only be issued in your home country (or country of official residence if you live elsewhere).

On both visas can you obtain an extension of stay, under the same conditions. Te difference is that the non-O allows for an initial stay of 90 days before you have to get an extension of stay and the O-A 1 year before you have to get an extension of stay.

To amplify on the previous post, a non-immO can be obtained in Thailand by switching to it from a tourist visa and then extending it ad infinitem on a retrement basis. If you get a non-immO visa in your home country they tack an "A" onto it so it is a non-immOA visa and the requirements are far more exacting that if you do it in Thailand.

There is a choice between a non-O visa and a O-A visa. But some embassies only allow one to apply for a O-A visa if one applies for a visa based on retirement. In that case when can apply for a non-O at a honorary consulate in the same country, as they are not allowed to issue a O-A visa and will thus provide a non-O.

The "A" stands for "approved", your stay is already approved, that is why you get 1 year on entry with a O-A visa.
