Mexico starts anti-dumping probe into US chicken

2011-02-09 02:54:38 GMT+7 (ICT)

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Mexico's Ministry of Economy announced Tuesday it has started an investigation into claims that the U.S. is dumping chicken imports in Mexico and harming the domestic industry, La Jornada reported.

Mexican chicken processors argue that in recent years, mainly from April 2009 to March 2010, imports of chicken legs and thighs from the U.S. increased significantly in the Mexican market and they were sold at below-market prices, which has put at risk the domestic industry.

The ministry said that in analyzing the arguments determined "that there are reasonable grounds to believe that during the study period (2007 to March 2010) U.S. imports of leg and thigh were made in alleged dumping conditions and caused damage to the national production of similar goods."

It is assumed that imports of U.S. origin were offered at prices significantly lower than those of the domestic industry, and also below those originating in other countries, the ministry said in the complaint published in the government's official gazette.
