Residency For Children

Featured Replies

I am an Australian and my wife is Thai. We have two children who have

Australian passports. Are our children also able to obtain Thai

passports (their mother still has a Thai passport)? Or, are our

children able to live with their mother in Thailand on some sort of visa while they go to school (I will be working outside of Thailand)?

Thanks in advance for any information anyone can give.

They are Thai so of course then can obtain passports. Both you and wife will have to sign for them. If you in Oz now you should apply at Consulate as they know the procedures and believe it is a simple process.

From your post appears they may have entered Thailand with Oz passports so they should switch to using Thai on next return if that is the case.

In the meantime if in Thailand there is no overstay problem for children under 14.

You need to tell us where they were born.

If they were born in Thailand, then you can just apply for Thai pasports using their birth certificate they obtained when born in thailand. They should leave and enter Thailand on their Thai PP, and leave and enter Australian on their Australian one.

If they were born in Australia and entered thailand on their Australian PP, then next time they fly out of Thailand, get them stamped out on their Australian PP. They should then re-enter on their Thai Passport next time they come back.

If they were born in Australia though, you will need to contact the Thai embassy in Canberra to issue them with a Thai birth certificate, which will help them get the Thai passport.

Thanks for you replies.

Both our children (now 11 and 10) were born in Indonesia and have travelled many times in and out of Thailand on their Australian passports. We are now currently living back in Indonesia again.

I wasn't sure if the Thai government would allow them to have a Thai passport whilst still retaining their Australian passorts. The Australian government now allows dual passports.

Dual nationality isn't illegal in Thailand either. Best thing to do is get in contact with the Thai embassy in Jakarta to organise their Thai travel documents and birth certificates as well. Next time they hit LOS, use the Thai PP's to enter.

I have contacted the Thai embassy in Jakarta and indeed they can obtain Thai birth certificates and passports. This will make their mother very happy.

Thanks for everyone's input.
