2011-02-09 11:34:40 GMT+7 (ICT)

PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least two police officers were killed and two others were injured when an explosion in the northern region of Pakistan blasted a police patrol unit, local media reported on Tuesday.

The explosion took place just outside the Mathra Police Station, located in the outskirts Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, officials told Pakistan's Daily Times.

The police unit was on a routine patrol near a police post in the Hajiano village, where a recent bombing took place, but a suspected remote controlled explosive device hidden under a bridge blasted the unit.

Sub Inspector Rasool Shah died immediately at the scene and the three injured were rushed to the nearby Lady Reading Hospital, where one of the injured, policeman Faiz Muhammad, later succumbed to his wounds.

Local authorities were investigating the incident, but no further information was available.
