ABU DHABI (BNO NEWS) -- The United Arab Emirates on Friday expressed its support for Egypt and said it is confident that the army is capable of running the country until elections take place.

The statement, issued by state-run media, came several hours after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned from the presidency following weeks of massive anti-government protests. Mubarak ordered the Armed Forces Supreme Council to take over, according to the country's vice president.

''The UAE, which has closely monitored developments in Egypt, confirms its confidence in the ability of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces in running the country's affairs in these delicate circumstances in such away that would realise aspirations and hopes of the Egyptian people," the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said in the statement.

It added: ''The UAE confirms that it is always keen to foster brotherly, distinguished historic ties with Egypt in a way that serves the interests of the two brotherly countries and their peoples within the framework of the UAE continuous support for Egypt and its people in all fields."
