Shooting at auto shop kills 4 in violent city of Juarez, Mexico

2011-02-14 07:58:47 GMT+7 (ICT)

JUAREZ, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- At least four young men, aged 18 to 22, were murdered in an auto shop, which resulted in 3 others being wounded in the violent Mexican city of Juarez, officials said Sunday.

On Sunday, at around 2 p.m. local time, several young men arrived at the auto shop in two trucks, stepped out, and opened heavy fire against the victims, who were apparently university students.

According to initial reports, three of the fatally wounded victims were found dead inside a truck that was parked at the shop, while the fourth victim was found inside another vehicle.

In a separate incident, a 50-year-old woman was shot to death while traveling in her vehicle with her 12-year-old son and another individual.

The reason of the attack is still uncertain, but they were traveling near the Rio Grande, which separates Juarez from El Paso, Texas, and after the shooting, the unnamed man ran across the river to seek help from U.S. Border Patrol agents. The 12-year-old boy survived the attack without any injuries.

Juarez is considered Mexico's most violent city, as it registered 3,100 assassinations in 2010, which is an average of 9 each day. With less than two months into the current year, around 300 deaths have already been reported.
