My sister and our 80 year old mother are coming to Thailand for 10 days in January and I‘m working on building an itinerary for them. They would like a mix of cultural, historical and natural sightseeing plus a little Bangkok – some costal and some inland. They are not big on beach resorts or baking by the pool. They could fly to locations or I can just get them a car and driver for a week (not sure if I can get that whole week off work so want to plan without me). They want to stay in nice hotels or resorts – within reason money isn’t an object. For instance thinking Oriental or Peninsula in Bangkok.

What are some really special hotels and resorts in Thailand, especially maybe not in a top tourist area? I For instance something like Kirimaya. www.kirimaya.com

What would be on your must see itinerary?

Can't really help with the itinirary except to suggest that you give mom adequate time to get over the jet lag....depending on how well she handles jet lag...do you know how well she'll handle it? The older I get the longer it takes me to get over it...or so it seems....for me having no plans or time tables for the first two or three days is what it takes to keep me happily recovering....other people might differ.

She's traveled a fair amount so it's not new to her although it's a great point and I'll factor that in. That's were a nice hotel to just relax at is nice.

Thanks for reminding me - it's a good point.

Jan's a good time to come...not too hot.

My Mum, similar age has been a couple of times. The first time she stayed at the Amari in Bkk in April 2 years ago.. I went to meet her and take out on the evening she arrived. As it was quite late and she was tired I suggested a short stroll after dinner. She got up to go and looked outside and said "Will I need my cardigan?"...I replied only if she wanted to swat flies. On getting out of the hotel’s air-con and into the street she declared "Oooh it certainly stays warm at night here doesn't it?".

My point? Well nothing really apart from the fact she wasn't used to the heat and it was a constant job to get her to drink liquids etc and stave off the effects of heat and exhaustion.

I'm sure you can invent a comfortable itinerary for her, most islands have beautiful comfortable resorts. Koh Chang, dull as dishwater and overpriced, Samui overdeveloped but plenty of choice easy to get to by plane from Bkk or Pattaya (45 min flight) and a TESCO’S to boot! Phuket more up market. Chiang Mai City for culture and a little cooler (dare I say chilly?).

PS –Don’t forget Pattaya, good hotels, shopping, entertainment . When my mum stays in Pattaya she stays at Cabbages and Condoms
