Red shirts to flood Rajprasong with 1 million red paper cranes

The red-shirt movement will flood the Rajprasong Intersection with 1 million red origami cranes on Saturday.

Nathee Sorawaree, a red-shirt leader, said red-shirt people would gather at the Pathum Wanaram Temple from 10 am to 9 pm to commemorate the deaths of red-shirt protesters.

At 5 pm, the protesters would gather at the Rajprasong Intersection and "release" 1 million red paper cranes.

'At 5 pm, the protesters would gather at the Rajprasong Intersection and "release" 1 million red paper cranes.'

And cause further heart ache and misery to Bangkok residents who wish to spend their weekend shopping, not to mention the businesses that suffer too. As if burning down their shops was not enough?

Folding a million paper cranes just to throw them out into the air is a lot of wasted labor that could otherwise be used for something more productive.

Will the folders be paid? Who will be folding the cranes? 500 cheap Burmese workers, making 2000 cranes each?

Or does their 1M value actually mean 100,000 like their proclaimed 1M man march? Nobody is going to be able to count them when they release them, so maybe they are just pretending that there will be 1M in an attempt at extravagance.

The wasted paper is also not beneficial for the environment, especially if they don't use recycled paper.

'At 5 pm, the protesters would gather at the Rajprasong Intersection and "release" 1 million red paper cranes.'

"release" ??? As in drop them on the ground?

Ahhh ... that's how they are going to get their million. Make 10,000 and drop them on the ground 100 times. That's why they need 4 hours (5pm to 9pm) to do it.

Now english is a nuanced language and in this case the meaning of "release" is "to set free" and probably is meant to symbolise the the wish of the Red shirts that their compatriots be set free from jail imo. I apologise if english is not your first language and this may not have been clear from the text.

Zero points for Thaksin Red Shirt originality...

Millions of folded paper cranes fluttered down from warplanes in the skies over southern Thailand

CBS News

BANGKOK, Thailand, Dec. 5, 2004

man i hate you, you beat me to it!!

mai pen rai... it was a classic fiasco, so common in his lame brained ideas....

If you recall, he put his signature on only one of the origami paper birds:

There is great interest in finding one paper bird in particular - as it has been signed by the prime minister himself.

Mr Thaksin has promised that the student who finds it will win a scholarship.

BBC - December 5, 2004

Followed by the inevitable cock-up of a Thaksin plan:

A number of people have come forward claiming to have found the prime minister’s bird since nearly 100 million 'origami birds' were dumped on Thailand's three southern border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani last Sunday in a gesture of peace for the troubled region.

However, all the birds have so far proved to be forgeries.

The way they are using the word it would it would mean that they are either a) going to release them from their grip (fall to the ground) or b:) release them as if to set free

Certainly you are most likely right in terms of it being a symbolic move to release (set free) those jailed but you cannot release (set free) these paper birds. I am not even sure if they glide as would a paper airplane. It is usually more common to use the word "drop" and not release when you are talking about an object that is immediately going to fall to the ground.

I think they would have been better off sticking with the balloons because at least if you let go (release) of a balloon it can float away symbolizing freedom as opposed to dropping (releasing) a folded paper into the filthy streets of Bangkok causing it to now be defined as trash.

Edit:

I think in post #14 they use a more accurate description:

100 million 'origami birds' were dumped on Thailand's three southern border provinces

Red shirts protest as detention goes on

By The Nation

A group of 30 red shirts yesterday complained about their continued detention, despite the government's pledge to free them pending trial.

"Some 104 red shirts are still in jail facing charges of violating emergency rules even though they should have been released since they are not prime suspects," the group said in an open letter.

Phayao Akhad, representing the group, lodged the letter with the Rights and Liberties Department, which was assigned to expedite bail reviews for the suspects.

Director-general Nongporn Rungphetwong said the department had checked on the needs and conditions of 180 red shirts held in custody, and 151 had sought legal assistance and help applying for bail.

The department had arranged for lawyers and financial sureties but the outcome depended on the charges and legal circumstances of each case, she said.

Wonder how many of the other reds, not the glorious leaders, could have been bailed out with the money it took to make the cranes?

What kind of crowds have they been drawing recently? I would think everybody is going to have to "release" 30 of them on their own if they have a million of these things.

Kind of irritating too that it is hard to get a decent napkin here, opposed to toilet paper, in a restaurant but they have a million sheets of paper to throw away into the streets of Bangkok,

Am sure there are also going to be some carpal tunnel problems in Issan soon.

Don't worry- probably only 20 or 20 thousand origami cranes will bother to turn up.

Phi phi Don explains very well how the 'releasers' are trying to spin this lame publicity stunt.

Nisa did rather well to see through the bs I thought.

As if Thailand has enough problems with deforestation and water run off causing flooding, they have waste 1 million more sheets of paper making origami cranes that will be swept up that evening. Chainsaws are licensed and regulated far, far better than cars, trucks and busses because of the illegal logging, and we KNOW how bad landslides and flooding are from greed driven, excessive logging. This takes even the red shirts to a new level of dumb or dumber. Think how many people they could help with the same wasted resources to do this useless gesture???????

OK, might as well ban Loy Krathong then. By extension of your statement above the vast majority of the Thai population must be dumber than even the redshirts, as they "release" paper lanterns into the sky every year, not to mention all those carcinogens being released from the burners, without a thought for the enviroment. Shame on them.

I wonder how many paper cranes you can make out of a khom loy?

Alternatively as they are going to flood Ratchaprasong, release may mean 'float !!!!!'

Those are made of rice paper (not from trees)( and wouldn't be used in origami which you need a stronger paper that will hold the folds. And most Thais don't do the lantern thing ... certainly not in BKK. I believe it is more a Chang Mai thing (aren't there a lot of Reds there .. just giving you a hard time) and for the tourists on the islands. ... though they did use a bunch (a thousand?) as part of an organized festival (I think for the King' Birthday) in BKK last year.
