BAKU, AZERBAIJAN (BNO NEWS) -- The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry on Monday announced that seven soldiers were killed by a fellow trooper in western Azerbaijan, the Trend news agency reported.

The incident took place at about 9:40 a.m. local time Sunday in the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry’s Military Unit No.N. A criminal case has been opened for the murder case.

Reportedly a soldier went on a rampage against his fellow comrades in a unit in Goy Gol district. As a result, seven soldiers aged between 19 and 20 years old were killed while another one was injured.

The probe is led by military prosecutor Shafahet Imranov. The investigation team has completed examining the crime scene as well as the seven bodies. Evidence has been taken and sent for further analysis.

The last incident of multiple killings in the Azerbaijani army took place in January 2010 when four officers were killed by two soldiers at a military unit in Dashkasan district.

On February 3, an Azerbaijani soldier was killed by a fellow conscript at a unit in Nakhchivan. The death was a result of the careless handling of a weapon.
