JALISCO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- A Police chief on Thursday was killed along his wife in Jalisco State, in central Mexico, the second attack against police officials within hours, El Universal newspaper reported.

Jesus Quitarte Ruvalcaba and his wife, Maria Guadalupe Aldrete Rosales, were executed by unknown gunmen at about 7:00 a.m. local time in Jalisco's capital Guadalajara.

Quitarte Ruvalcaba was the head of the car theft division of the State Police. He was found inside a police van Colomos Street in the El Batan neighborhood, northern Guadalajara.

Preliminary reports indicate that the couple attended morning mass at a local church. After that, a group of gunmen were waiting by the police vehicle and shoot at the couple as they got in the van.

Police agents located the vehicle with the two bodies inside as well as 20 shells of AK-47 rifles. Reportedly, the gunmen escaped in a white van and a white vehicle but no suspects have been detained.

This was the second attack against Jalisco Police heads in less than 24 hours. On Wednesday night, a law agent of the kidnapping division was assassinated in the Las Aguilas neighborhood.

Officer Jesus Adriano Gomez was killed as he clashed with a group of gunmen at the service of a drug cartel. The gunfight took place in the southern area of Guadalajara and one suspected gunman was killed as well.
