At least 27 injured in southern Iraq protests

2011-02-27 22:07:51 GMT+7 (ICT)

MISSAN, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- At least 27 demonstrators were injured Sunday in clashes with security forces in Amara city, the center of southern Iraq's Missan Province, a medical source said.

"Amara's Sadr Hospital has received today (Sunday) 27 demonstrators, injured due to exchange of attacks between them and the security forces," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, adding that a small child had been injured by a shot.

Security forces used water cannons and fired shots into the air to disperse hundreds of citizens, demanding appointment in Iraq's National Police forces. A source told Aswat al-Iraq early in the day that mob-fighting forces had managed to disperse the demonstrators.

On Friday, at least 7 people were killed and several wounded during the 'Day of rage' demonstrations in many cities of Iraq.

There have been a series of similar protests across Iraq inspired by uprisings in the Middle East. The protests are against corruption, poor public services, and unemployment.
