German court sends Austrian soldier to prison for spying for Russia

MUNICH, GERMANY (BNO NEWS) -- A Munich court on Tuesday sentenced an Austrian soldier to a one-year suspended prison term for spying for the Russian secret service, Deutsche Welle television reported.

Harald Alois, 54, was convicted for passing secret information on military and civilian helicopters to Russia. The defendant admitted working for the Russian secret service from 1997 to 2002.

In addition, the Austrian soldier acknowledged paying an engineer at Eurocopter, a subsidiary of defense giant EADS, for documents related to military and civilian helicopters, mainly related to the Tiger and NH 90 aircraft.

The Eurocopter employee was arrested in 2007 and received an 11-month suspended prison sentence in 2008. His cooperation with German authorities led to the arrest of Alois on May 27, 2010.

During trial, it was revealed that Alois received 5,700 Euros ($10,500) for supplying Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service with log books and inspection records about helicopter technologies.

Russia has been involved in other espionage cases in Europe and the U.S. in recent times. In January, a Russian diplomat was expelled from Ireland for his involvement in the production of six fake Irish passports used for an espionage ring.

The Russian spy ring was unveiled by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) last year. Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs ordered the Russian embassy to remove the diplomat from Irish soil.

In 2010, the FBI detained twelve Russian nationals in relation with a spy ring. After a long investigation the FBI determined that the 12 people acted as unregistered agents for the Russian government, sending secret messages and following orders received from Russian contacts.
