Can anybody say how serious the visa issuing officers are about confirming my GF's expenses will be covered while she is in Canada? Would a written invitation by a Canadian resident for her to stay at their home be sufficient?

In June she will be applying for a Canadian tourist visa so we can meet there for a couple of months. I currently live in the U.S. but know a tourist visa here is near impossible to obtain. She is 50 (a widow) and has a home and car in her name but not much more. She has never been out of Thailand. I lived with her for three years there before returning to the states last summer. I want to show her as much of Canada as I can afford by driving here and there, visiting my relatives, seeing Niagara, etc. I'm sure I will need to buy her r/t ticket prior to her applying for the visa. She will probably be traveling with an adult Thai woman friend whose sister's daughter lives in Quebec City. We haven't decided where we'll settle in next, maybe somewhere in Canada, maybe the U.S., or maybe in Thailand again. I'm trying to determine which options I can afford. I am 64 and have been on U.S. Social Security Disability for four years. I am a dual U.S./Canadian citizen.

Thanks

Hi mate: Well I had no trouble getting a visa for my then girlfriend a couple of years back..we were going for my sons wedding ( Canadian born) I put together every possible thing that would ensure that the Canadian gov would feel confident that she would return to Thailand. eg house pics, land tax docs, farm pics ....etc etc..also begging letter from me ( polite as can be!!!)Copies of my/her passport ( mine is Australian)..flight details ie return flight booking. My CC info plus bank statements....etc etc.. I actually called the Canadian embassy and asked what should I supply... lady said "anything and everything,we need to know she will NOT stay in Canada" We applied for a 30 day visa and got a 3 months ...extended further upon request.

Suggest you pick up the phone to the embassy ( consulate actually)...

good luck..pm if you have any questions you think I could answer

Thanks for the reply Dave. Unfortunately I forgot to mention I was hoping she could get the tourist visa without mentioning anything about me. Not rolling in dough any more these days, I don't think getting into my financials will help - perhaps would even complicate things. Assume I was not even in the picture. That would be best I think. Assume a Canadian friend of hers just invited her to visit and bought a ticket for her -- would she be able to get a tourist visa? I can call the embassy anonymously and talk to them. I just wondered if anybody, like you, had first hand experience but perhaps a little closer to my actual situation.
