2011-03-03 06:14:09 GMT+7 (ICT)

DURANGO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Eight suspected gang members on Wednesday were killed in a gunfight in northern Mexico, El Universal newspaper reported.

The gun battle took place in the early hours of Wednesday in the Las Bayas town in Durango State. Authorities said that two rival local criminal organizations clashed in the mountainous community.

Police forces arrived at the scene and found two burned vehicles and many ammunition shells. In addition, eight bodies were found, three of them wearing military uniforms.

However, state authorities confirmed that the individuals had no ties with the Mexican Army and the uniforms were copies. One person was injured in the gunfight and is in serious condition. The man was transported by helicopter to Durango city, the state capital where he is being treated at a local hospital.

Durango Governor Jorge Herrera Caldera urged residents to avoid going out at night due to the severe criminal activity on the streets. For the last two days, Durango has witnessed clashes among local gangs fighting over territory control.

Herrera added that he has met with local officials to asses the incidents that have occurred statewide. In order to safeguard streets, police forces will patrol Durango's streets at night.

Durango also has a strong drug cartel presence. On December 2010, 13 drug cartel members, including former police officers, were arrested in the northern state. The detainees were an armed group at the service of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

In addition, two other former state police officers were arrested during the operation in which Mexican federal police clashed with gunmen, leaving seven people killed, including two civilians.
