Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq resigns amid protests

2011-03-03 16:53:51 GMT+7 (ICT)

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq on Thursday morning submitted his resignation from his post amid ongoing protests in the North African nation, officials said.

The resignation of Shafiq came just a day before a planned "Friday of Determination" protest in Cairo and other cities, demanding the resignation of Shafiq. A statement on the Facebook page of the country's armed forces confirmed that the Prime Minister had resigned.

Former Transport Minister Essam Sharaf has been appointed by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to form a new cabinet, the statement added, without providing other details.

Egypt plunged into chaos in January when hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in Cairo and other major cities to demand the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. He resigned last month, but not before nearly 400 people were killed in the revolution. More than 5,000 others were injured.
