At least 18 killed as criminal groups clash in northeastern Mexico

CIUDAD VICTORIA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- At least 18 people were killed when two criminal groups clashed in northeastern region of Mexico, officials said Monday.

Mexico's Public Security Department said that at around 6:50 a.m. local time, the groups clashed at Abasolo, Tamaulipas' municipal building.

A series of trucks and SUV's with around 4 or 5 people in each one of them opened and exchanged fire. As drug cartel violence has dramatically increased throughout the region, the town has lacked a state police command post for several months.

The department said they were coordinating security efforts with local authorities in order to investigate the incident, but no further information was available.
