Scottish police arrest foreigner in connection with Stockholm bomb blasts

2011-03-09 00:13:43 GMT+7 (ICT)

GLASGOW (BNO NEWS) -- Scottish police on Tuesday morning arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with two bomb blasts in the Swedish capital in December last year, officials said.

A statement from Strathclyde Police said the 30-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was arrested during an operation in the Whiteinch area of Glasgow. The operation was carried out at around 6.05 a.m. local time.

"This has resulted in a 30-year-old foreign national being arrested under the Terrorism Act (2000)," the statement said. "The operation centers on a previous incident in Sweden."

Scottish police provided few details about the arrest, but said there is no evidence to suggest a direct threat to Scotland. "It was intelligence led and relates to allegations that this individual has been involved in aiding terrorist activities outside Scotland," Strathclyde Police said.

The Stockholm bombings happened on December 11, 2010 when two bombs exploded, killing the bomber and injuring two people. It is believed the bombs exploded prematurely and that the suicide bomber, who was identified as 28-year-old Iraqi-born Swedish citizen Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, was on his way to Stockholm central station or a nearby store.

The attack was believed to be the first suicide bombing in Sweden's history.
