Former Iranian President Rafsanjani loses assembly chief post

2011-03-09 09:06:12 GMT+7 (ICT)

TEHRAN, IRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Tuesday was ousted as chairman of the country's Assembly of Experts, local media reported Tuesday.

Hard-liners had been pushing for the removal of Rafsanjani, 76, as chairman of the Assembly of Experts, criticizing him for being close to Iran's opposition. The assembly is a made up of 86 clerics who are in charge of electing, monitoring, and even dismiss and unseat Iran's Supreme Leader.

Conservative cleric Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani, 80, was elected as the new chairman of the Assembly of Experts after receiving 63 votes.

Rafsanjani served as Iran's President from 1989 to 1997. During the 2005 elections, he ran again but eventually lost to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
