Times are tough at the bottom of the food chain and gold shops are tempting targets. A good number are already setups to where the owners/sellers basically have to sell their goods from behind a cage like some convenient stores in the west (in bad neighborhoods).

2 killed, 4 wounded in Narathiwat gold shop robbery

NARATHIWAT, March 14 –Two persons were killed and four others were wounded in a gun attack at a gold shop in violence-plagued Narathiwat on Monday, said the police.

Wichai Sritaksinakul, a gold shop owner, and Jitti Pleumjai, a 34-year-old shop’s security guard, were shot dead after a group of seven men armed with M16 and AK47 assault rifles fired into the gold shop, Pol Lt Ram Chansuponpot from Sungai Kolok police station said.

The injured are the gold shop owner’s wife, his brother and two neighbours.

According to an initial investigation, the seven gunmen got out of a bronze sedan, parked in front of the gold shop and shot Mr Jitti and Mr Wichai before smashing stained-glass windows displaying gold ornaments.

At the same time other gunmen attacked another gold shop next door before fleeing.

In a related development, the local police reportedly found the car used in the robbery in a rubber plantation in Waeng district. The investigation showed the licence plate is counterfeit and three empty gold ornament cases were found in the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the police said that surveillance cameras at the gold shop captured images of one gunman clearly as his scarf fell from his face at the crime scene. (MCOT online news)

like many things in thailand having a security guard is just for show

Not only in Thailand.

And just for the show had a positive effect on the safety of shops and malls.

But not much of a change when they walk in and just shoot you.

Such an intelligent comment.

What are gold shops supposed to use? SWAT teams??

Jeeeeeeeeez.

Yes. I would assume security guards are meant to deter petty snatch-and-run thieves and opportunistic shoplifters. No one could expect an untrained, probably unarmed guard to defend a shop against such a well-armed premeditated attack. Dismissing his death as a "just for show" event is really another childish attempt at Thai bashing.

Gold Heist Suspects Linked to Insurgent Group

One of the injured victims from yesterday's armed robbery at a Narathiwat gold shop has been declared dead.

Meanwhile, police have found that the weapons used in the crime were part of those earlier stolen from an army outpost.

Su-ngai Kolok district police have reviewed security camera footage of the armed robbery at Lieng Ah gold shop on Butsayaphan Road in Narathiwat's Su-ngai Kolok municipality that left two people dead and four others injured.

The footage showed the robbers were carrying various types of weapons including a handgun.

The camera could clearly capture the face of one the five suspects whose mask fell off during the robbery.

Police are searching through criminal database to find a match and expect to find the suspect's identity soon.

After the suspects fled the scene, police tried to track and intercept them, but found the abandoned getaway car instead near a rubber plantation in Waeng district.

Police searched the vehicle and found a large cache of war weapons including three AK-47 assault rifles, an 11-millimeter handgun, two nine-millimeter handguns, one.

38-caliber pistol an an Uzi submachine gun.

Investigators disclosed that the weapons found were part of those stolen from a Narathiwat army outpost raided by insurgents on January 19.

Narathiwat provincial police have been instructed to review the evidence and arrest the suspects, likely members of the local RKK insurgent group.

They are also believed to be responsible for the attack on the Narathiwat army outpost.

Meanwhile, doctors at Su-ngai Kolok Hospital said one of the four victims, the gold shop owner's brother Wichit Sritaksinakun, has died from gunshot wounds.

The condition of the three other injured victims, Wichai's spouse Malee Sritaksinakun, the owner of the adjacent shop Chainarong Papake and his relative Wuttikorn Jittanachote, has stabilized and they are currently recovering at Su-ngai Kolok Hospital.

The guards are not for show, as in 'no training units with non-functional guns' etc -- in a gold shop close to home here it is an off-duty cop that is the armed guard in the evenings. Neither he or his .357 are merely for-show. But it is very hard to fight off multiple armed attackers that fire upon you without warning.

That thought goes through my mind when I see the armed police walking around the airport to make us feel safe.

and they are much better armed and trained than the typical shop guard.

A lot of those shop guards are over the hill or off duty cops. They are of course at a disadvantage though because the first thing the bad guys are going to do is either take out or disarm him first.

Police Hunt Down Robbers of Violent Gold Shop Robbery in Narathiwat

Security agencies in Narathiwat Province have dispatched personnel to hunt down the suspects of a violent gold shop robbery.

Weapons used in the crime were found to be some of those stolen earlier from an army outpost.

Narathiwat Deputy Provincial Police Chief Police Colonel Nanthadet Yoinual commented on the progress in the case of the armed robbery at Lieng Ah gold shop on Butsayaphan Road in Narathiwat's Su-ngai Kolok Municipality that left three dead and three others injured.

Nanthadet said police and military forces have been dispatched to Su-ngai Padee and Waeng districts, where police exchanged gunfire with a group of suspected insurgents believed to be part of the same group that carried out the armed robbery.

Investigators are still reviewing vital evidence including the security camera footage that clearly captured the five suspects’ faces, but the police have refused to disclose further details regarding the footage except that the suspects’ faces were masked.

As for the suspected getaway car that was discovered in Waeng District, authorities have found that the vehicle has been inactive since 2005, and police believe the owner of the pick-up truck is not involved.

The Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Deputy Commander Police Major General Yongyut Charoenwanit commented on the dispatched security forces in Su-ngai Kolok and Su-ngai Padee districts, saying the nine firearms found inside the abandoned getaway car, including a nine-millimeter Uzi sub-machine gun, are in fact the weapons that were previously taken from an army outpost in Rangae District.

Yongyut instructed security personnel in all 13 districts to strengthen security and rebuild public and tourist confidence in the area.

A few thoughts about the heist:

Until the full story is known, consider maybe that the guard was a trained professional, and maybe did bravely tried to defend the shop. Seven men with assault weapons would easily overwhelm the poor man.

Secondly, if the guard was a retired or off-duty officer, I think that the wrath of the Thai police and investigative authorities will come to bear on the perpetrators. Please let's not denigrate the capabilities or motivation of the BIB until we hear more of the investigation. And if they find the one guy who's face was recognized, I don't think that his interrogation will be overseen by some lefty human rights group.

And third, if this crime was committed by an Islamist revolutionary group, I'd assume, and wish for, the Thai government to take the gloves off and take the insurgency in the South seriously. And this is not an anti Muslin comment. Most people living in Thailand know that the everyday working class Muslims in Thailand are peaceful, and probably despise the radical Islamists for their jihad for conquest of the world.
