Thailand urges nationals in Japan to register with embassy

BANGKOK, March 18 -- Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Thai citizens in Japan to register with the Thai embassy in Tokyo in order to record the overall number of Thai residents in the country and tally those who may missing from the massive earthquake and destructive tsunami in northeast Japan last week, according to Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi.

Mr Thani, who heads the Department of Information, said that there were an estimated 5,000 Thais unaccounted for, but now 800-1,000 were confirmed safe.

He said there was a possibility that many had already returned to Thailand without informing the embassy in Tokyo or the Thai Consulate-General in Osaka.

To verify the numbers, he said, the ministry is asking them to inform the coordination centre at ministry of foreign affairs headquarters.

The spokesman also said that the ministry would like the Thais who had never registered with the embassy, for fearing to affect their status as many of them had overstayed in Japan, to register for checking the number of Thais in Japan and to count who were really missing in the quake and tsunami.

He said there would be three Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) aircraft to bring relief aid to assist Japanese quake and tsunami victims, two arriving tomorrow morning and one on Sunday. All the aircraft are able to carry Thais with them on the return flight.

Mr Thani said to date 240 Thais had registered to fly on the C-130s while Thai International Airways (THAI) had confirmed that there were flights available and sufficient for Thais who wanted to return to Thailand.

In related developments, Dr Theerawut Kuhaprema, director of the National Cancer Institute of Thailand, said that staff from Ministry of Public Health are stationed at Suvarnabhumi Airport on a 24-hour basis but there is no need, at present, to use equipment to scan for radioactive contamination from the passengers from Japan as there was no radioactivity leaking from the nuclear power plant.

As for the potassium iodide tablet, he said, it would not be distributed for all who travel to Japan but would give to persons who would go to the at-risk areas as it can have side effects among those who don't need it.

Potassium iodide protects the thyroid gland against cancer by blocking absorption of radioactive iodine.

Dr Theerawut added that until now the Japanese government did not ask for any medical teams but Thailand was ready to dispatch its teams on request. (MCOT online news)

One soldier killed in insurgent attack at Pattani army outpost

PATTANI, March 18 - One soldier was killed when presumed insurgents on Friday fired on an army outpost in Thailand's restive southern province of Pattani.

Yarang police chief Pol Col Tuandir Juthanant, army and provincial officials inspected the army outpost in Yarang district this morning after being informed of the insurgent attack.

Initial investigation said two men, assumed to be insurgents, used M16 rifles to shoot into the army outpost Ror 8023 and soldiers fired back until the assailants fled.

Private Wutthipong Sangsahachart, 23, was seriously wounded in the attack and was sent to the district hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Over 4,300 people, including residents, teachers, security personnel and suspected insurgents, have been killed since the insurgency in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat erupted 2004.

The attack on the army units in the violence-plagued provinces recently has become an insurgent strategy. One major incident took place during the night of Jan 19 when at least 40 men armed with military weapons assaulted on the Ror 15121 army outpost in Narathiwat's Ban Marue Botok during the camp’s evening meal.

At that time four soldiers--including an army company commander--were shot dead while six others were wounded. (MCOT online news)

Thai authorities have yet to locate 4,000 Thais in Japan

Thai authorities are still unable to locate about 4,000 Thais known as living in northeastern Japan at the time a massive earthquake and tsunami hit the area last week. Problems in the communication systems there have made it hard to check their whereabouts.

"Of 5,000 Thais there, we can locate just between 800 and 1,000," Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi said.

He said all the Thais who could be contacted were safe.
