UK PM Cameron calls for int'l community to come together ahead of crucial UN vote on Libya

2011-03-18 03:18:24 GMT+7 (ICT)

LONDON (BNO NEWS) -- British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday called on the international community to come together and take the 'right steps' on Libya.

Cameron was speaking earlier on Thursday in the House of Commons ahead of a United Nations Security Council vote on whether to impose a no-fly zone over Libya, where security forces have violently cracked down on anti-government protesters.

"After extensive discussion with Lebanon, France, the US and others, the UK tabled a new draft Security Council resolution in the UN," Cameron told the House of Commons. "It includes a no-fly zone, banning all flights except humanitarian ones, an extension of the travel ban and the asset freeze and tougher enforcement of the arms embargo, particularly on the Libyan Government."

Reports later on Thursday indicate the UN Security Council resolution is likely to be approved, with abstentions from several countries such as possibly Russia, China and Germany. "I urge all to take the right steps so that we show some leadership on this issue and make sure that we can get rid of this regime," Cameron said.

On Wednesday, the UK Foreign Office summoned Libya's ambassador to the UK Omar Jelban to a meeting to express "profound concern" at the regime's attacks on civilians. Libyan officials have since promised more attacks if there is foreign intervention.
