hey,

if there is anyone who is familiar with the neighborhood around the TRSC Lasik Center located at:

U Chu Liang Bldg. 968 Rama IV Rd. Silom, Bangrak, Bangkok 10500

i am interested in reasonable accommodations within walking distance. my first trip to BKK, dontcha know, i'm not sure if this center is walking distance from hotels or if walking is even advised.

thanks for input.

Very few people in Bangkok walk further than the nearest bus stop and the sidewalks are usually not pedestrian friendly (uneven and obstructions - not to mention the motorcycle or two). That said walks are fine if you can see the holes (not flooded) and observe that traffic will not automatically stop for you at a crossing regardless of what the lights may say. I don't know the exact location of that building but most hotels in the Rama IV area are among the higher priced. There is good and inexpensive taxi service in Bangkok and most people not knowing where to go would use them - just be sure to use the meter and if driver does not want to do so get another - there are thousands of taxi and most will be happy to use meter - but those you find stopped in front of hotels are notorious for not being among them.

The U CHU LIANG building is located on the south side of Rama IV opposite Lumpini Park.

I don't know how you define a "reasonable accomodation"

There are two good hotels not far away from the lasik centre:

The Dusit Thani (5-star, elegant hotel, prices start at USD 100) at the corner of Silom and Rama IV

The Swiss Lodge on Convent Road (prices start at USD 60)

There are also two nice places on Sathorn Rd. (The Sukothai, The Banyan Tree),

but both are pricey. (A business traveler magazine recently voted "The Sukothai" as #2 in the world.)

For more information have a look at http://bangkok.sawadee.com/hotels/index.html

You could also try thaivisa's partner: thai visa hotels :o

anything in the Silom area would be good, although the traffic on Silom itself can be horrendous, perhaps Sathorn is marginally better?

i have putzed around the streets of seoul and the streets of beijing, and wondered if maybe i would find similiar situation in bkk which your response confirmed. still need to do homework regarding the various 'sections' of bkk. at this point, do not have an emotional attachment to any place. the hospital sent a spreadsheet with a list of hotels 'within walking distance' to them, and yes, costs are eye-popping ($120 US/night!). plan on being in the country for a couple of months but not at that rate!

taxis work for me; thanks for the caution about the meters.
