How do the Thai people do it? I mean they can sit down in this position for an hour and feel comfortable. Is this a genetic thing or is it a training thing?

I have wondered this as well.

I think it is just life-long conditioning.

Like sitting lotus style and sleeping on the floor.

I guess you do it your entire life it doesn't phase you.

I took up Yoga a couple of years ago and during my first lesson I became aware how different humans are. I have always been able to squat, I thought it was a natural thing, but during the first lesson in the beginners course to Ashtanga Yoga I realised that others aren't that flexible. Some people simply can't do it.

I dont know why this is, but I learned that some people struggle with it. Even before I took up Yoga I could squat for ages as a way of sitting/relaxing by supporting my own weight. It's like a built in chair.

I have bad knees. I don't squat. If there isn't a Western style toilet nearby I just wait until I explode or the toxins build up in my bloodstream until they send me to the hospital where a nice nurse will take care of the problem for me.

It never ceases to amaze me how those 90 year old Thais have no problem doing something that causes me excruciating pain. Just comes from a lifetime of practice I guess.

I also don't sit lotus style. Ouch. And I can't sit on my heels the way the Thais do. Double ouch. During the Buddhist ceremonies they have learned to bring me a chair.

You surely are not so serious about your ability to endure until it explodes,

are you?

But can't blame you for enjoying a helping hand from a nurse though. B)

If you are dead serious, pm me.

Is Thai visa going pornographic?

That position is known in the trade as the Asian squat and it is to do with race.

Europeans as a rule, only a few exceptions, have bigger and thicker thighs and will therefore be more vulnerable to cramps and muscle pressure in that area than Asian people. So Asians have a greater tolerance for squatting for longer periods.

Now, would I lie to you?

Moved to the Pub...

maybe a new sub forum would be a good idea.

how about the " spit and sawdust " sub forum of farang pub, fun, entertainment and ex - pat life whistling.gif

in fact maybe i should start a new thread asking for ideas for names to be put forward. biggrin.gif

would be a good way to kind of balance out the proceedings, dont you think. wink.gif

Be warned, the dangers of following through on a fart when assuming this position are high.

:hit-the-fan:

So very true.

I agree with an above poster.

I have muscular legs and when I squat my heels come up.

My BIL, Thai of course, had the same problem.

Yes, conditioned reflex may play a part, but genetic physiology might be the prime factor - simply because they can.

How do they do it? By starting early and continuing for a lifetime. Watch an elderly person walk. Sort of like sailors on the high sea: a little bowlegged and a waddling gait. They've literally modified their own hip bone structure.

That's why Thai girls have such nicely developed butts.:jap:

The ultra low squat position stops potential splash back on the bog, if you had to use a squat toilet from birth you would be pretty good at it too. The Thais are clearly showing off to each other who can get their arse closer to the bog without actually touching it, always showing of those Thais.
