TOURISM: Foreign arrivals drop by 10 per cent

Authorities set to launch major offensive worldwide to win back holidaymakers

BANGKOK:-- In its latest statistics for January to August, the Association of Thai Travel Agents (Atta) reports that tourist arrivals handled by members at Bangkok International Airport dropped by 10.25 per cent.

Atta welcomed 1,540,137 travellers in the first eight months at Don Muang, against 1,716,001 visitors during the same period last year.

From January to August, the largest number of tourists were from China with 211,309 visitors, followed by South Korea (198,493), Japan (185,732), Hong Kong (105,581) and Singapore (99,698).

The United Kingdom was the Atta’s top European market with 93,449 visitors, followed by Germany (46,558) and France (22,468). Australia supplied 28,647 tourists and the United States 2,484.

August’s 243,112 tourist arrivals were a drop of 1.54 per cent from the 246,924 visitors last year.

In August, Asian markets were the strongest with China delivering 40,185 visitors, Japan 25,067 and Hong Kong 24,901. The top European market was the UK with 11,740 travellers, while the US supplied 2,116.

To attract tourists back to the country, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Thai Hotels Association will launch more marketing campaigns during 2006, a year in which the country aims to reach a target of 15.12 million visitors, generating Bt533 billion in revenue.

The agencies will focus on seven international market regions: East Asia, Asean, South Asia, Oceania, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.

Meanwhile, the TAT expects to encourage as many as 79 million domestic travellers generating Bt370 billion in revenue. The domestic market is a key element to sustain the tourism business during the low season.

TAT governor Juthamas Siriwan said in Chiang Mai that the authority would work with four companies in China to bring at least 690,000 Chinese into the country next year. The four companies are Beijing Jiedajiaqi International Travel service, China Comfort Travel, Publicitas China, and Guang Dong China International.

She said China was a very important market for Thailand. The two governments signed a memorandum of understanding on trade and investment as well as tourism in Chiang Mai.

The problem is the Chinese don't stay as long or spend as much, are not that happy with the food and leave quicker. Oh well, I suppose turnover will carry the day. :o

What, only 2,484 tourists from America arriving at Bangkok airport? I thought that it definately would have been more than that number.

But America is very far away, roughly 24 hours by air from Newark, NJ.

Therefore, I am privileged to be one of those 2, 484 Americans.

This article is misleading. Note that it says "the Association of Thai Travel Agents (Atta) reports that tourist arrivals handled by members at Bangkok International Airport dropped by 10.25 per cent". This only accounts for the number of arriving tourists that contacted the ATTA. The overall number of tourists arrivals may well have increased during this same period.

So if they say only 2,484 Americans arrived in the first 8 months of the year, and 2,116 of those were in August alone, that would mean only 368 arrived between January and July ?

I must be almost the only Canadian, and have "arrived" 3 times already this year. But I don't use the ATTA services so I don't count.

Without the overall TAT numbers, it's really hard to judge. Maybe there are more arrivals, but fewer people are using the ATTA services ? Does the Immigration branch publish any figures ?

Same distance as it is from New York City! :D

Yeah, I thought that there would be far more Americans in Thailand. Go Figure.

But I wonder why there are so many English people in Thailand? This Forum should probably be renamed BritishVisa Forum! :D

Therefore, I am privileged to be one of those 2, 484 Americans.

I am also a proud member of the "2484" club! :o
