AMSTERDAM (BNO NEWS) -- Dutch authorities have launched an investigation into the pregnancy of a 12-year-old girl, who gave birth during a school trip last week.

Kirsten Smit, a spokeswoman for the country's prosecutor's office, said the 12-year-old girl became pregnant at the age of 11. She gave birth to a baby girl last week during a school trip and was reportedly unaware that she was pregnant. Both are in a good condition.

It was not immediately known who is the father of the baby, but police have begun an investigation and have interviewed the girl. "It is in any case a criminal offense," Smit said. The age of consent in the Netherlands is 16.

According to De Telegraaf newspaper, the 52-year-old father of the girl was previously convicted of sexually abusing a child in a previous marriage. He served two years for the abuse, the newspaper reported, although Smit did not want to comment on the report.

So far, the youngest confirmed mother in the world is Lina Medina who gave birth in Peru in 1939 to a boy at the tender age of just five. Despite investigations, it was not possible to determine who the father was.
