webfact
Mother Killed with Children in Arms in Tragic Fire A devastating fire has destroyed a two-story house in the Wat Pradoo community, leaving one adult and 3 children dead. A fire razed a two-story house in the Wat Pradoo community in Soi Petchkasem 36/1. Ten fire trucks were dispatched to the scene, and it took firefighters about half an hour to get the blaze under control. Rescuers found four burnt bodies in a room on the ground floor. The mother and her two children were found together, appearing to be hugging at the time of death. They have been identified as 36 year old Noophan Kotchaiya, 7 year old Jiranan Wiangnont and 4 year old Panuwat Wiangnont. Not far from the three was the body of the woman's niece, 16 year old Jeeraporn Sriphonla. The woman's husband survived the fire, as he was staying at his friend's house to give his room to his niece while she visited his family during the school break. Police are interrogating witnesses and forensic officials are collecting evidence to determine the exact cause of the fire. -- Tan Network 2011-03-
onnut
Wow sad story. Shame she didn't cuddle the niece also. Wonder why they couldn't get out if they were on the ground floor!

johnhender
i was on a nearby street. the thai drivers wont even move to let the fire departmant through to help. i wonder if maybe the people would move over for fire and ambulances(like everywhere else in the world) their lives would have been saved . . I sometimes can't move either cause intersections in Bangkok gets congested since thai people drive straight in to the junction when a yellow light appears and block other oncoming traffic while in the middle of the intersection. Secondly, how will we ever know that there is someone injured or sick in the ambulance when I have seen drivers turn on their lights and sirens just to get through traffic!! gregb
I shrank in horror reading that. How can any of us with families not be extremely disconcerted by the reality of this kind of tragedy. What would you do if you were stuck inside a burning building, knowing your fellow citizens cared so little about you they wouldn't even let the fire truck through to save your life and that of your family because it might cost them 3 minutes at a red light? My thoughts go out to the husband who lost his wife and children in a senseless and likely completely preventable disaster.
swillowbee
... they were possibly prevented from escaping through the windows by permanently affixed burglar bars ... common here ... permanently affixed burglar bars are outlawed in US fire districts, probably many other nations that have building codes ... with no key, they must be detachable from within the building. ... even if Thailand has such a code, it being actually enforced has a snowball's chance in Hell ... Thailand is a third world country, with a very thin veneer making it appear as an emerging nation (Thailand's affection for form over substance) ... how sad to read of this. ... how absolutely horrifying for this woman and her children.
