KOHAT (BNO NEWS) -- Four young children were killed in northern Pakistan on early Wednesday morning when an explosive device they had found and were playing with went off, local media reported.

AAJ TV reported that the explosion happened near a pond in Jerma village of Kohat District, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, when at least seven children were playing there. Some of the children had found a shell, apparently from a mortar, and were playing with it when it exploded.

Pakistani media said four boys between the ages of 7 and 9 were killed, while three others were seriously injured. Authorities believe the explosion was accidental.
