PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least fifty militants have been killed in two days of an ongoing security operation in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region, officials said Thursday.

Officials told the Pakistan Times that at least fifty militants had been killed and scores injured in an ongoing offensive in Tehsil Saafi and Baizai, which are located in Mohamand Agency in the restive tribal region of Pakistan, near the Afghan border.

Pushing their way through the Soran Doran and Badmai areas of Baizai, Pakistani security forces were also able to target a number of militant hideouts with the help of gunship helicopters in their efforts to fold al-Qaeda Islamists.

Other militant hideouts were destroyed in the Dawezai area of Pindyali and in the Padan Ghaar area.

Al-Qaeda and Taliban Islamists in the volatile tribal region have long targeted civilians and security forces with bomb and suicide attacks in their efforts take control of the region.
