Appointed senators have been selected: EC

By Prapasri Osathanon

The Nation

The senator selection committee has finished choosing appointed senators to fill 73 vacant seats, Election Commission (EC) secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiygarn said yesterday.

Suthiphon said EC chairman Apichart Sukhagganond had scheduled a special meeting of the EC on Tuesday to approve lists of selected senator candidates.

"The EC meeting on April 12 will be in the morning. The EC will approve the selection result for the 73 senator candidates. The selected candidates can retrieve the document of approval and report themselves to the Senate secretariat by April 19," Suthiphon said.

He said EC staff would provide service during the Songkran holidays until all the successful candidates received their documents.

The lists have been sent to Apichart but have yet to be announced, he said.

Four shot dead in Thai south: police

YALA, April 9, 2011 (AFP) - A suspected gunman killed in a shoot-out with security forces was among four people shot dead in violence across Thailand's troubled deep south, police said Saturday.

The 47-year-old Muslim man died in the firefight after 70 police officers and army troops surrounded a house in Yala province on Saturday following a tip-off that militants were hiding in the property.

Police said the victim was wanted on several arrest warrants related to security issues including shootings and bombings. Two others are thought to have escaped.

Also in Yala province, a 47-year-old Buddhist deputy village headman and a 20-year-old Muslim security volunteer were shot dead as they rode on a motorbike on Friday afternoon.

In a another incident on Friday in nearby Pattani province a 52-year-old Muslim government employee was gunned down as he drove to collect his pay.

Insurgents have waged an uprising in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004, leaving more than 4,500 people dead -- both Buddhists and Muslims -- according to police figures.

Many Muslims who are considered "traitors" to Islam for cooperating with Thai authorities have been killed.
