Seven injured in suicide blast near army vehicle in Afghan capital

2011-04-09 23:01:39 GMT+7 (ICT)

KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- Seven people were injured on Saturday in Kabul when a suicide bomber blew himself up near an Afghan military vehicle, officials said.

Pajhwok news agency reported that the attacker blew himself up after a brief gunfire, injuring three civilians and four soldiers. A statement issued by the president's office, however, said 10 people were injured, including seven soldiers.

The blast took place at 4:30pm local time in Ahmad Shah Baba Mina east of Kabul city, one kilometer away from the main Kabul Military Training centre. The incident shattered windowpanes of nearby shops and residences.

Kabul police chief, Col. Mohammad Zahir, told Pajhwok the attacker has not been identified, but an investigation has been opened.

President Hamid Karzai condemned the incident in a statement, saying the enemies of Afghanistan would not be able to meet their goals through launching such "cowardly and inhumane" attacks on Afghan security forces.

It was the sixth attack in the capital since the year started. Violence has escalated in previously peaceful areas of Afghanistan in recent months.
