Dutch police arrest teen for threatening mass shooting on Twitter

2011-04-10 20:03:13 GMT+7 (ICT)

HOOGVLIET, NETHERLANDS (BNO NEWS) -- Dutch police officers on early Sunday morning arrested a teenager in Rotterdam after he allegedly threatened to carry out a mass shooting, officials said.

The threat came just hours after 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis opened fire with an automatic weapon at the Ridderhof mall in the town of Alphen aan de Rijn, located in the western part of the European country. The shooting left 7 people dead, including the gunman.

A statement from police in Rotterdam, the country's second-largest city, said the 17-year-old man was arrested on early Sunday morning after they received a tip about his messages on the social networking website Twitter.

"Haha Iraq is also coming to the Netherlands," the teenager allegedly posted on Twitter. "This man in Alphen already has 6 kills on his name. I'm going to outdo him."

The teen, who had around 300 followers, immediately received criticism from other users on Twitter and eventually deleted his message. "It was only a [expletive] joke," he later added. "Look how serious you take that tweet!"

It is not the first time Dutch police have arrested someone for making threats on Twitter. In February, police arrested a 17-year-old girl in Soest after she tweeted she was planning to bomb her school.
