BuckarooBanzai Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I need to check for a few wire shorts in my house wiring and require a cable tone generator & probe to track the wiring behind some surface cement work. Does anyone know of a source for one of these kits - preferably cheap as I will not use often. As I live in the sticks in Surin a source that had a web page and would ship would be ideal but any info would be appreciated. Thanks for any help that can be provided.
longball53098 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) I think this is what you are looking for? May not be the price you want though Tracers Edit to change the link Edited April 14, 2011 by longball53098
gregb Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 We used to call them "warblers". These guys are pretty good for test equipment. http://www.protronics.co.th/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask2-04.tpl&product_id=564&category_id=85&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=248〈=th
howto Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) A continuity tester... a visual indicator unit, cheap, very easy to build (only 4 parts) ... http://www.simple-el...transistor.html - 1, 2 AA 1.5v battery holder - 1, 9013 transistor - 1, green LED - 1, 15K ohm resistor Kits for science projects can be found here, perhaps in the educational section, my son built one last year at school, but I don't know where the teacher got them. Only does audio. It's simply a square cube (transistor+piezo) and a 2xAA battery holder. Inexpensive. Google continuity tester. And many multimeters have a continuity function... Amorn or China Town... Edited April 14, 2011 by howto
BuckarooBanzai Posted April 14, 2011 Author Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) Thanks all for your input. I will check into the resources although it is disheartening to see 4000 baht plus when they sell inexpensive ones in the US for about $20. howto - although a tone generator and probe is a continuity tester it allows you to do so without direct contact to the conductor on the probe side. This means you can find hidden breaks in continuity behind wall coverings. That way you don't have to rip out a whole wall to find a break. They are pretty nifty tools. See below if you want to see one in action. Thanks again all! Edited April 14, 2011 by BuckarooBanzai
howto Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Oops... Buckaroo my apologies... never dawned on me you were alluding to that device... I used those extensively many years ago while at ATT and Sprint. Back then they were very expensive, over usd 1000- I'm amazed at the prices you mentioned, usd 20~ (even the Bt 4000 is a surprise) I could certainly use one. Could you please update this thread with the results of your quest? Cheers.

The problem I have had is that those who ship worldwide add so much to the shipping cost and with the potential import taxes etc. I have not bothered pursuing this. But it is an interesting search all the same to see what is available. Will re-post if I find one locally at a good price. Thanks again.
longball53098 Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 I would suggest having a friend carry one over here in their bags next trip. Light weight and easy to pack.
howto Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 fwiw... A while back, I recall bangkokimages mentioned / reviewed www.shipito.com ( http://www.shipito.com/ ) on his site http://www.bangkokim...erm-Update.aspx Perhaps worth looking into...
