Kukrit Institute marks birth centenary of a great statesman

By The Nation

30153588-01.jpg

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn yesterday opened Kukrit Institute to mark the birth centenary of Thailand's former prime minister of the 1970s MR Kukrit Pramoj. Politicians, diplomats, scholars and writers turned up in droves for the occasion to remember the late statesman's numerous contributions to the kingdom's political and cultural advancements.

Born into a highly respected family of aristocracy, Kukrit was a politician, intellectual, thinker, opinion leader, novelist, journalist, dramatist, khon dancer, actor and the doyen of Thai literature.

At the opening ceremony, it was clear that praise was heaped on the illustrious polymath for his best known, if controversial, achievement: that of pioneering the official diplomatic relations between Thailand and communist China during the Cold War decades that saw communist China cast its shadow over Southeast Asia. His effort somehow reflected Thailand's ability to live in peace with countries of different systems and especially to balance one power against another.

The opening ceremony saw keynote addresses on the development of the two nations' diplomatic ties over the past three decades by Chinese ambassador to Thailand Guan Mu and former Thai PM Anand Panyarachun. Both reaffirmed Kukrit's prominent role in pioneering Thailand's diplomatic relations with China that continues to thrive along with their growing trade volume.

"Kukrit of course must be remembered for his pioneering effort in fostering the diplomatic relations between Thailand and China. I'm very much impressed with this. This reflects his strategic thinking ability and his farsighted vision to realise the importance of the diplomatic ties between both governments," said the Chinese ambassador who acted as Chairman Mao Zedong's interpreter when he and Kukrit met in 1975 in Beijing.

Mu noted the friendly bond that formed between the two during the historic meeting. "Kukrit was determined in and committed to starting the diplomatic relations with China. Three decades on, the relations continue to thrive, with trade volume between the two countries growing to US$52.947 billion as of last year from only US$24.6 in 1975. The success of that meeting was beyond anyone's expectations," he added.

Former premier Anand believed that Kukrit was living proof that there remained a degree of righteous conscience among Thai politicians then, saying Thailand had been lucky to have a leader like Kukrit who was well versed in not just international politics and foreign policy, but also international diplomacy.

"In that meeting, Mao asked Kukrit, 'are you not afraid of visiting communist China?'

"No, I'm not. I'm here to see a friend, not a communist," Anand quoted Kukrit as saying during the 1975 meeting in Beijing.

Anand revealed that Mao was glad to see Kukrit's visiting diplomatic delegation in Beijing, and despite his frail health, he agreed to have a discussion with Kukrit on the relations between the two countries and the situation in the region.

"Mao told Kukrit that he was not well, and may be dying soon," Anand quoted Mao's words.

Then Kukrit replied: "The world of humanity cannot afford to lose the No 1 baddy like yourself."

Upon hearing his response, Mao laughed out loud, said the former PM.

Cops hunting top killer

By The Nation

Police are launching a manhunt for a career gunman who may have shot dead a police station chief on Monday.

The suspect has been identified as Narong Thongchai, aka "Phrab 100 Kills", who is in a police profile of assassins.

Narong's image matched those taken by surveillance cameras that captured the murder in Nakhon Sawan late Monday night.

Provincial police chief Pol Maj-General Chadil Phromephaibool declined to confirm that the gunman caught on camera was Narong.

"Police can arrest him if it were him, because he is wanted in several warrants for many killings that might have been his work," he added.

Police are looking into profiles of victim Pol Colonel Krirkrit Niyomserm, chief of Sai Ngam Police Station in Kamphaeng Phet, to determine motives behind his murder.

Narong is believed to have killed many people including three high-profile figures, among them a woman killed recently in Chon Buri.

BMA plans to raise Bt1 bn for hospital project

By Thanatpong Kongsai

The Nation

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is planning activities to raise a further Bt1 billion to fund the construction of Bang Khun Thien Hospital and a new Geriatrics Centre after Bangkok Council approved Bt1.4 billion for the project.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Dr Malinee Sukavejworakit yesterday said the construction plan was almost finished and terms of reference for the bid process were being finalised. They will be submitted for the relevant committee's consideration by the end of this month.

Budget consideration and bidding will take about five months before construction begins around October, she said.

In the meantime, the BMA Public Works Department will build an earth dam and prepare the construction site.

The facility will open for outpatients in October next year and should offer full services by late 2012 or early 2013, she added.

As the city has to find an additional Bt1 billion for the project, Malinee said the BMA would organise fund-raising activities including a charity marathon to celebrate His Majesty the King's 84th birthday this year.

There will also be a Buddha amulet project, the holy anointing ritual for which will take place this Saturday at City Hall's Lan Khon Muang plaza.

Yala bombers into extortion: Udomchai

By The Nation

30153579-01.jpg

The people behind Monday's car bomb in Yala are insurgents who mobilise funds by extorting protection fees from rubber planters, Fourth Army Area Commander Lt-General Udomchai Thammasarojrat said yesterday.

"These groups of local insurgents are still supplied by donations from foreign countries but they misuse the money," he said, without giving details.

The money generated from protection fees and other illicit businesses including drug dealing and contraband oil is much larger than the donations, he said, but did not give figures.
