Edible Plants

Featured Replies

i am sure there are many

i came across one recently

the fruit is a long brown bean-like pod-like looking thing at least a foot long

does not look edible or particularly appealing

the tree and the 'fruit' smells very sweet

tastes like a cross between licorice and tameron

one local told me you can get drunk from eating a lot

another told me you can not eat it

i ate plenty with no adverse reaction after a small taste test

its sweet and wonderful and fascinating to discover a free wild treat

i dont doubt it has some health benefits as it grows wild and free without any interference from humans

it is a bit of a chore to eat

i am thinking there must be a candy or food processed from this plant

that way easier to eat at least

anyone know what this is?

i have a video too but it is 7 meg

Not sure, but I think it's a tamarind. No idea of the name in Thai.

Lots of big seeds covered in stringy fibre. If I remember correctly, supposed to be quite nutritious, vitamin-wise.

Rather awkward eating, though, with all that fibre and spitting out the stones.

However, could be totally wrong. Only posting because no one else more knowledgeable has.

The wife says not tamarind, it's part of what the older village folks chew, and they do get a kind of "buzz" from chewing it. No idea of nutrition, etc., probably not too much good for you.

Years ago they use to eat magic mushrooms, maybe they still do?. they had the feeling of a high when you eat them . Then they found out that the feelings where actually your brain cells dieing , So carefully what you eat. I think maybe the residue is still acting up on me.:bah:

Quite amazing, these trees. We've 3 very large expanding that act as a broad canopy for one of our gardens. Fantastic shade conduits and when in full bloom.....they almost send a golden glow within their immediate environment. The scent is heavenly. The flowers are often used in a variety of ceremonies. Some old-timers still use the long bulbous pods {and the seeds/fruit within} for medicinal purposes.......can be used in foods - as additives and thickening agents. It's a great value, as once they establish themselves, this tree is extremely hardy - drought, flooding, etc.

Edible plants, well ganja is one. :D
