george Posted October 2, 2005 Share Posted October 2, 2005 Rotten apples 'to face chop' PM urges police to hunt down corrupt officers BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra urged police yesterday to go out and fight two of society's enemies _ vice and corrupt policemen _ and set Oct 13, Thai Police Day, for the "declaration of war". "On Oct 13, police will declare their resolve to relieve people's suffering and vow to no longer be a burden on society. We'll eliminate the rotten apples among us so they can no longer cause trouble," he said. The police force needs to improve its public image in order to regain the public's trust, he said, adding that the government would provide support in terms of equipment, budget and improved welfare. Approval ratings on police performances would be regularly checked from now on, he said, adding that the government might ask pollsters to survey public opinion on the performance of the police force every three to six months. "Police need to examine themselves very carefully ... if they want to win back the confidence and trust of the public," he said. Mr Thaksin said officers who did their jobs properly but were still treated unfairly by their superiors when it came to promotions could turn to him for help. He plans to open a Thai Rak Thai-run call centre by the end of the month to monitor and pass on public complaints to the police. Mr Thaksin said calls connecting with police superintendents would be made on behalf of callers who had failed to get any help from police stations. Mr Thaksin said he had never questioned the ability of the Thai police, knowing full well that they perform well and can manage anything, no matter how difficult. He told the police to make sure areas under their jurisdiction remained free of fraud, pornographic material, drugs, football gambling, prostitution, illegal logging and other forms of crime. However, social critic Sangsit Piriyarangsan said freeing the police force from corruption was an "impossible" task as bribe-taking had long been a tradition. The economist said a Chulalongkorn University study had found that even if a police officer had a good education and came from a decent and affluent family, there were no guarantees he would refuse bribes. "The system is to blame. It changes people. It breeds bribe-takers. Corruption has become normal and everyone who does it thinks it's okay," he said. Mr Sangsit said Mr Thaksin's vision for cleaning up the police force was simply an illusion. "It's the same as when he said he would make Thailand free of poverty within six years. Let's see if that can really happen," he said. I remember when I was growing up, we had - 1) the lone ranger, 2) have gun will travel 3) bonanza 4) rawhide 5) mighty mouse 6) superman 7) batman and a whole slew of other characters ready to fight evil whenever and whereever evil appears. some homespun heros would do wonders to the kids here. instead of bringing in characters from other countries, create your own. comic books with superheros doing good deeds. if you want to set good examples, that's one way to do it. how about the adventures of "buddha man"? ..able to crush evil doers with a single prayer. "khun somchai" - the guy next door who is mild mannered but packs a punch when the going gets tough. hey. if you want to brainwash the kids to be good citizens, you might as well do it right. right? these soap operas depicting all the cheating and unhappiness between people. don't people ever wonder how kids will grow up watching this stuff all the time? there needs to be a balance with some hardhitting hero type shows. On the Thai Soapy side, I find them quite annoying, but when you look at it, they only confront issues that exist and how things are normally dealt with (extreme as they maybe somitimes). If theres a problem, nobody will speak up in a Thai Soapy. In England everyone's bitter and angry at the world (so an Englishman tells me) and in Aus we only ever seem to confront adolescent issues(i.e neighbours). I think part of the problem with the world nowadays is that reality is so much in everybodys face that we are becoming insensitive to it. you read about people dying, but it just goes out the other ear. the newspapers are so full of stories regarding death, and unhappiness. ugh! I just think that people need a break from reality sometimes. so that you can reflect on things. superheroes may be one way to address this. I grew up on comic books, superheros, etc. and I think I came out ok. at least I don't wish my neighbor ill will. actually, I believe that it is good karma to wish my neighbors good memories. I don't smoke, gamble, take drugs, drink excessively, or chase women. isn't that the type of citizens the world wants? er... maybe TV is the wrong place to ask that question? ...to the audience in the back. yeah. Read a few days ago that there's a comic book coming soon to be based on the adventures of a popular monk, titled something like "Naughty Novice Visalo". Whether he kicks butt when evil gets in his path I seriously doubt, but it could be just the thing for +vely influencing Thai youths' obsession with cartoons. But we all know that. They know that too. I think comedy central should make their hub here. Seems the mighty taksin has to fill a quota in the papers daily. Probably to keep the real stories out. I wonder how many other countries PMs Presidents laugh at all this stuff. Lil Johnnie would. He can't even own a company whilst his PM pretty sure its the same for T Blair. Just remember the more bribe you pay them results in more of them doing there work they were hired to do. They will not waste numerous hours trying to find someone they can shake down for bribes.
