I served my time in the trenches, where I was the guy getting stepped on for next to nothing. I learned alot during my career about how to take credit for other people's work. That's an incredibly valuable skill, which I am helping those under my tutelage to master.

I thought a managers main role in Thailand was to avoid his/her customers at all costs.

Any of you that have tried to see a manager when you are not satisfied with a service or have a complaint will know exactly what I mean.

When your personal and corporate visions are aligned with performance excellence and delighting your customers, it is a joy to meet them!

I learnt a long time ago, when I was but an apprentice 'scourge of the seas', that consultants have more loyalty to their customers than their employers....

If the manager is overworked , this may be illusory or the result of reaching his own level of incompetency , he will employ two subordinates to do his work .

Ideally, managers hire competent staff and make sure they are doing their jobs efficiently with the least amount of hassle. They often take care of purchasing materials so the company runs efficiently and the staff have what they need instead of waiting around doing nothing. Managers search out other markets so the company can grow and doesn't stagnate. Managers keep the staff happy, and solve problems beween the staff members.

But like everything, there are good managers and poor ones. If the owner of the company has any smarts they get rid of poor managers, just as good managers get rid of poor staff.

My initial thought was - if you have to ask the question, you're not up to being a manager!

When I reached a managerial level (finally) it most often felt like being a referee between staff, owners and customers. Good people skills were the main requirement (I'm talking about the hospitality industry - don't know about others).

100% - that's the way of the world.

If you don't like getting 1/5 find out how to become a manager.

Or better yet, cast that suppressive system away and work for yourself. Self-employment, for a better term, has it's upsides.:)

It's the worst of both worlds

idle, shiftless staff and a slave-driver for a boss.
