Hi Guys!!

I have been on a doctors appointment which was demanded by my insurance company. The doctor found out that my bloodsugar was skyhigh, as he said. So I started a diet without any sweets whatsoever. It is working out really nicely.

I would like to ask you guys for a help in advising me what to use as mixer when I i.e. drink my vodka. I have been all my life been drinking vodka and coke or vodka and Sprite. Now these days are over. Are there out there any alternatives more or less sugarfree. Juice is much sugar as hell so that is a bad alternative.

But maybe some of you have any ideas how to mix my drinks. I really dont like to drink the vodka as schnaps,,, I like to mix it up with sweettasing pops.

Thanks for any input.

Diet Coke / Coke Light has no sugar (carbohydrates) in it at all, neither does Vodka or any other distilled spirit for that matter.

High blood sugar generally means Diabetes. How high was it ?

And "diet" drinks are sweetened with Aspartame, a known carcinogen.

Take your pick - cancer or diabetes.

Utter horseshit !

As a diabetic booze of all kinds is a sure no no. Low carb diet, lots of vegables and exercise are the only things you can do if you have type 2 which means blood sugar is more than 125. Life is not enjoyable under these conditions we paying for our earlier sins.

They have their own numbers here in Thailand. But my figures was 269 whereof 100-140 are Ok according to the doctor.

It is not Diabetes 1, but merely diabetes 2........

I have taken care of it and have no medicin at all. It took me 2 weeks to get rid of the overflow of sugar in my blod and I have now

a steady value of round 128.

Google Aspartime + health issues or something like this. Lots of info. Not gonna give you a cancer but there is a whole load of health issues with it.

To the OP. I don't drink sugary drinks nor I drink Aspartame swetened junk because it's a poison.

My fav is a Whisky and soda or Vodka on the rocks or Vodka with Tomato juice a.k.a. Bloody Marry (or clamato juice if you can find it in Thailand). No sugar there. But as other's said, if you have a diabitis, you shouldn't be drinking - alcohol will do funny things with your digestive system so your blood sugar will go for a whild ride.

Aspartame is not a "known carciogen" and certainly a lot better for you than the alternative (sugar)!

The artificial sweetener aspartame has been the subject of several controversies since its initial approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974. The FDA approval of aspartame was highly contested,[1] with critics alleging that the quality of the initial research supporting its safety was inadequate and flawed and that conflicts of interest marred the approval of aspartame.[2][3][4] In 1987, the U.S. Government Accountability Office concluded that the food additive approval process had been followed properly for aspartame.[2][5] In spite of this, critics like anti-aspartame activist Betty Martini[6] have promoted undocumented claims that numerous health risks (such as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, methanol toxicity, blindness, spasms, shooting pains, seizures, headaches, depression, anxiety, memory loss, birth defects and death[7]) are associated with the consumption of aspartame in normal doses. These health risk claims have been examined and debunked by numerous scientific research projects, and are also generally dismissed by governments and major health and food safety organizations.[2][8][9]

Publicity of this controversy has been spread through an elaborate health scare[10] and "Internet smear campaign"[11] involving hoax[10][12][11] e-mails repeating Betty Martini's widely circulated conspiracy theory. Her undocumented claims are still repeated by thousands of self-published Web sites.

Aspartame has been found to be safe for human consumption by more than ninety countries worldwide,[13][14] with FDA officials describing aspartame as "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved" and its safety as "clear cut".[4] The weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe as a non-nutritive sweetener.[8]

Also alcoholic drinks should be avoided if you have problems with your blood sugar!

Alcohol use with diabetes can be a complex issue and the treatment and type of diabetes has a lot to do with it.

There's no general recommendation for Type 2's not being treated with insulin to avoid alcohol from what I've been told by an endocrinologist although many general practice doctors will tell you otherwise, most likely due to a lack of education on their part. General practitioners in my experience have a limited in depth knowledge of diabetes.

The main issue with beer for example is that it contains carbohydrates, not that many compared to a glass of regular coke for example but they are there all the same.

If you're on insulin then it's a whole different story as part of the metabolic process that breaks down alcohol prevents the liver process known as gluconeogenesis - in short it stops your liver from making it's own glucose so the blood sugar level can go too low and potentially cause hypoglycemia which can then potentially induce a coma in extreme cases. This only happens when using insulin injections though. The recommended action to get around this is to eat during and after drinking to offset this.

Drinking alcohol prevents gluconeogenesis in everyone which likely explains why people often feel hungry after drinking a lot of alcohol as their blood sugar is reduced.

Some interesting but basic information on the liver pathways involved in this is available here : http://www.quora.com/Why-does-alcohol-consumption-drinking-induce-hunger

For the record I have type 2 diabetes and have researched this topic at length and in some detail over the last year or so.

Andy - Thanks great suggestion will certainly try that one.....

Shurup - thanks, will for the very first time in my life try a Bloody Mary.. taste like shit probably...

but thanks anyhow appreciate it!!

Ukrules - have the same experience that you have about alcohol. As long as we dont overdo it, it should be Ok to take

a couple of stiff ones a couple of times a month. Even a glass of red win everyday is OK, doctor says in Sweden.

I am not on insulin so no problemthere. Phil Connors!!! Thanks for all your input as well. So Ok now I have a couple of alternatives,

I love to have a drink sometimes every month, life wioll be too boaring otherwise.
