Painless actually. I'm 49 and applied on the grounds of "travelling Thailand to find suitable retirement location". Eight days total time to receive stamped passport back. Went through the Denver Consulate.

Thanks for the good advice lopburi3 and Dr. PatPong! :o

Now if I can only get you guys to negotiate the monthly 'allowance' to the GF's family..... :D

Dont negotiate, make up a buffalo story, it works for me

:D Not a bad idea but I won't go that route. So far the GF has been honest with me (or I haven't caught a lie yet) and I have been honest with her. If I have to lie to keep the relationship together then it's time to move on. Actually I've never given her a set amount she just tells me what she needs money for and if it's reasonable I give it to her. But I think it will soon be time to just deposit X number of dollars in her mom's account each month and leave it at that.

I look at my American friends who build the $400,000 house and buy the wife a new SUV every 3-4 years and I don't worry about giving my GF a few bucks......she is well worth it and I can't wait to get back to LOS to be with her soon. :o

Wow, I mean like how good is that? You are living the ultimate dream that most people can only fantacize about; You got the killer visa for one, plus you get to send your monthly payments to your faithful issan gf's family instead of buying the stateside wife a half mil pad and SUV. I can safely say that you have effectively won the powerball lottery as has your loyal gf. What's she up to while you're stateside anyway?

Congrats on your visa,LDB(I play and love them too, just was in Chicago, great trip.) Anyway, concerning your last comment,I would highly advise the"middle way"...........

"mai chon, mai ruay".(not rich, not poor) In other words ,dont be "cheap Charlie" but dont go overboard either.

Your line of thinking matches mine. I plan on supporting the GF fully (although she says she wants to work not just sit around) and giving her mom 8000 baht each month. I think this is generous for an Issan family. If we stay together for at least a year I want to find a better business for them instead of what they're doing now (selling fruit at different markets). They work hard for little money I want to change that.

Glad all going well. I would suggest you leave the support for mother to your GF as it is normally from the daughter and suspect it would make her feel better to be the direct source of funds. She would probably have a better appreciation of what is needed and when.
