BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) -- A police officer was arrested in southeastern Iraq on Sunday after he allegedly killed his wife and three young children, local media reported.

The Aswat al-Iraq news agency, citing security sources, reported that the unidentified police officer killed his wife and three children in the al-Shohadaa neighborhood of Amarah, a city close to the border with Iran. It lies about 390 kilometers (242 miles) south of Baghdad.

The source told the news agency that the children, two boys and one girl, were between the ages of 3 and 6. The age of their mother was not immediately known.

"The bodies were removed to the al-Sadr Public Hospital morgue in Amarah," the source told Aswat al-Iraq, giving no details about how the four people were killed. The police officer surrendered himself to authorities after the murders and was taken into custody.

The motive for the killings was not immediately known.
