Syrian army arrests 499 people

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (BNO NEWS) -- Syrian security forces have arrested 499 people in the southern province of Dara'a, the state-run Sana news agency reported Sunday.

"Hunt operations have led to the killing of 10 members of the terrorist groups and the arrest of 499 others. Two field hospitals were uncovered in the mosques of Abdullah bin Abbas and Abdullah bin Rawaha," a military source said.

The source added that two soldiers were "martyred" and 8 others were wounded.

The crackdown on protesters continued in the restive city of Daraa on Saturday, a day after 19 people, including four soldiers, were killed and more than 50 others wounded.

The UN Human Rights Council on Friday voted for sending a mission to the Middle East country to investigate the reported violations of international law after hundreds of people have been killed during weeks of unrest.

Kyung-wha Kang, the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that over 450 people have reportedly been killed and three times that number injured due to the widespread use of live fire ammunition against protesters.
