MAIDAN SHAHR, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- An explosion in central east Afghanistan killed at least seven militants, including one militant commander, officials said Monday.

Maidan Wardak province governor spokesman Shahidullah Shahid told Pajhwok Afghan News that the group of militants were trying to fire missiles into the Sultan Band area of Jaghatu district, but one of the missiles exploded prematurely, killing the seven militants, including the group's commander, Mullah Babar.

According to reports, the militants were targeting Jaghatu's district headquarters building and were known for attacking Afghan and foreign troops, as well as intimidating civilians.

Babar was a Taliban district military commander, but the terrorist group has not released a statement regarding the incident.
