Seven suspects arrested over murder of German tourist in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (BNO NEWS) -- San Francisco Police Department on Wednesday announced that seven suspects were arrested in relation to the murder of a German tourist last summer, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Mechthild Schröer, 50, was caught in the cross fire of a gang fight outside a San Francisco comedy club on August 8, 2010. She was visiting San Francisco with her husband, Stefan Schröer, celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.

According to San Francisco Police, the German couple was deciding where to eat dinner when gangs began fighting firing many bullets that hit Schröer and two other people.

The gang clash took place in San Francisco's theater district, outside a private party. The three victims were not the intended targets. The German citizen was the only fatality as the two other wounded, a 15-year-old boy and 19-year-old woman, survived.

A passing taxi driver helped police officers in identifying one of the vehicles used by the people involved in the gunfight. Police arrested five individuals but no one was charged with the murder.

Prosecutors also declined filing criminal charges against an 18-year-old teenager who was arrested that night, claiming that the ballistics and gunshot residue tests had not been received as well as a video analysis of the scene.

Schröer, a rector at a school in Hanover, Germany, was just about a block from the hotel where she was staying with her husband. Stefan Schröer has since made several return trips to San Francisco to receive updates on the case.
